67k-Mile 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa Kiln Red Metallic

This 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa’s factory color is the very rare and attractive Kiln Red Metallic. Kiln Red Metallic was only offered during the 1984 production year of the 3.2 Carrera. Interior is original Champagne Leather with rare optional full leather sport seats. Other factory options include steering wheel with elevated hub, Blaupunkt Monterey radio, 16 inch Fuchs forged alloy wheels, automatic heater control, cruise control and front and rear spoilers. One doctor owned for 28 years with odometer showing approximately 67k miles. Carfax shows no accidents. Taken out of storage three years ago with major service completed and documented (including fuel tank cleaned, new fuel injectors, new temp sensor, new ignition wires, new spark plugs, flushed brake system, new brake calipers and rotors and more). Original owners manual and toolkit are present and included.

*History

Sold to it’s first owner in North Carolina, this 1984 Carrera Targa resided the longest with it’s third owner (a doctor in Maryland), who purchased it in August of 1988.  After passing away due to illness in late 2015, his family put the car into storage and eventually sold the car to it’s fourth owner in 2016. The service history file contains records from 1988 to 2019.

*Exterior

This Carrera is still wearing it’s original and very rare Kiln Red Metallic color (L811).  While the majority of the paint measures as original, a $1500 paint repair was recently completed due to a scratch on the driver door and overall the paint now looks very good.  The original body metal shows no rust and is very straight with only a couple of minor dings.  Body panel gaps are very good and all body seals are present.

*Interior

The interior is upholstered in it’s original Champagne leather with contrasting dark brown upper surfaces. Factory ordered rare leather sports seats are installed with the most wear showing on driver side outer bolster as shown. The original leather dash shows some slight warping and a few blemishes, but has no cracks. Rear seats and speaker panel are very nice with no fading or rips. Photos show no rust in the front and rear floors, with the floor mats pulled back. Targa top shows one small repair, but has no rips.

*Mechanicals

The original 3.2 liter engine (*64E01399*) was rated at 207HP when new and runs strong with no evidence of oil leaks. According to the son of the third owner, the engine was fully rebuilt prior to his father’s passing, but the documentation could not be located. Prior to our purchase, the prior owner’s experienced Porsche mechanic stated that the engine does show evidence of a rebuild. The original 915 transmission (type 915/68, 74E01358) shifts well. Documented service from 2016 to 2019 includes the following:

-new tires (205/55R16 in front and 225/50R16 in the rear)
-flush brake hydraulic system
-new brake rotors and rebuilt brake calipers
-new fuel injectors
-new cylinder head temp sensor
-r&r speedometer
-fan belt and wiper blades
-ignition wires and spark plugs
-fuel tank cleaned
-new battery
-hood and decklid struts replaced
-throttle switch position adjusted
-professional repaint completed on driver side fender and door

Service records from 1988 to 1997 document ride height set and suspension aligned, new oil lines, new Koni shocks installed @ 56k miles, oil and filter changes, new targa top vinyl and headliner.

*Documentation

Clean title, original owner’s manual and documented service history file spanning 1988 through 2019 are included. The CarFax report (see scan in gallery) shows no accidents, but indicates an exceeds mechanical limits due to the third owner’s wife incorrectly recording the odometer mileage as 1 mile, while transferring title into her name in 2015 after her husband passed away. Fortunately, the service history file accurately documents the mileage history with specific records as follows:

06/09/89 – 51,953 miles
05/21/90 – 56,583 miles
12/19/90 – 57,447 miles
02/18/92 – 59,517 miles
04/23/93 – 62,055 miles
03/30/94 – 63,437 miles
07/19/96 – 65,695 miles
05/05/97 – 66,443 miles
02/22/18 – 67,135 miles (note owner fell ill and car was mostly stored from May ’97 to Feb ’18)

The original option code sticker is still present under the hood and decodes as follows:

CO2 – Catalytic converter
018 – Steering wheel with elevated hub
158 – Cassette-radio Blaupunkt Monterey
395 – 16″ Fuchs forged alloy wheels, front 6″ with 205/55, rear 7″ with 225/50 tyres
