1968 Porsche 912 Soft Window Targa 5-Speed
This 1968 Porsche 912 is a soft-window Targa example that has had only two family owners, since new. Both owners resided in California and the original front and rear California black license plates are still with the car. It is finished in Silver Metallic over black leather upholstery and is equipped with a removable Targa roof panel, a brushed stainless-steel Targa bar, a removable soft rear window, 15″ chromed steel wheels, disc brakes, leather seats, a Blaupunkt stereo, and a heater. The numbers matching 1.6-liter flat-four was rebuilt at 73k miles. Recent service in January 2025 included valve adjustment, oil and filter, battery, hood and decklid shocks, spark plugs and more. This SWB 912 soft-window Targa is now offered with original owner’s manual, warranty book, original 1968 sales invoice, factory Kardex, service records, and a clean California title.
Paint and Body
The car came finished from the factory in Bahama Yellow and was repainted in Silver Metallic. Equipment includes the original (never restored) vinyl-covered Targa roof panel, a brushed stainless-steel Targa bar, a removable soft rear window, chrome sugar scoop headlights, fog lamps, black windshield wipers, and a single exhaust outlet. The front and rear Targa seals were replaced in April 2024.
Interior
The cabin features front seats in black leather as well as a black dashboard with aluminum trim. Factory optioned with rear storage compartments. Appointments include Blaupunkt stereo, and a heater. The original four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of VDO instrumentation including a 7k-rpm tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, auxiliary gauges, and an analog clock. The five-digit odometer shows 110k miles. Recent servicing included new hood and decklid shocks and new wiper blades.
Wheels and Brakes
The 15″ chrome steel disc wheels are mounted with 195HR15 Bridgestone RE960AS tires. The car is equipped with an independent front and rear suspension, and stopping power is provided by disc brakes at all four corners. Service in July 2019 included new Bilstein struts and shocks, rebuilt brake calipers, steel braided brake lines and adjusted parking brake and front wheel bearings,
Mechanicals
The original numbers matching (1282739) 1.6-liter flat-four is installed. Service records document a full engine rebuild at 73k miles and a clutch replacement at 94k miles. Recent servicing in January 2025 included valve adjustment, compression test, ignition timing adjustment, carb tuning, oil and filter, battery, spark plugs, and ignition wires. Servicing in July 2019 included valve cover gaskets, K&N air filters, steel braided fuel and oil lines. The original air cleaners and smog pump are included. Power is sent to the rear wheels through the original numbers matching (1282486) five-speed aluminum-case manual transaxle. New shift lever and rod bushings were installed in 2019.
Documentation
Documentation includes the original bill of sale, original owners manual and warranty book, service records from 1968 to 2024, factory Kardex and a clean California title. The factory Kardex lists the original factory color as Bahama Yellow, optional equipment, and engine and transmission serial numbers along with a production completion date of January 30, 1968.
